Interstate 10/Fort Grant Traffic Interchange

Interstate 10 / Fort Grant Traffic Interchange.  Construction complete 2007.

Client Program / Project Description.  The scale of roadway projects can provide the potential for expressing to travelers cultural and natural history important to local communities.  In Willcox, the two elements most often mentioned are cattle ranching and natural history exemplified by the Sand Hill cranes that migrate to the Willcox Playa annually.

This project included structural aesthetic treatments for bridge barriers, pedestrian fences and protective railings, as well as landscape and sidewalk improvements.

WSA wrote the Transportation Enhancement (TE) grant application.  This project received TE funding to provision facilities for pedestrians and bicycles and landscape and other scenic beautification. The new bridge with sidewalks connects the northern part of Willcox where the future sports park will be, to the southern part where the downtown area is.  The new landscape and sidewalks along SR 186, in addition to the structure aesthetics on the new bridge, provides a beautiful new gateway into Willcox.

WSA Scope and Role.  The project design and construction documents respond to a Transportation Enhancement grant for structure aesthetics for bridge barriers, pedestrian fences and protective railings.  WSA interpreted cattle ranching and the cranes at the scale of the bridge elements.  A large part of the design process was coordinated with a citizen’s art committee appointed by the City of Willcox.  The final design is a direct result of the local committee’s input and decisions made through several meetings and design charettes with the citizens.  It was embraced very favorably by the community, due in part to this extensive public outreach and education.  In addition to planting and temporary design,

During construction, WSA reviewed structure aesthetics formliner samples and erosion control measures in the field.
