Curtis Park

Curtis Park, construction completed 2006.

Client Program / Project Description. Based on an existing master plan, this bond-funded program included Little League and Senior League baseball fields, off-leash dog park, play equipment and picnic areas, riparian zone restoration, connections to the Rillito River Park, restrooms, maintenance building, parking and allowance for a future Community Center building and skate park.  Riparian restoration included creation of habitat for native birds and other fauna.

Formerly a sand and gravel operation—recently backfilled—the site presented the potential for uneven settling and unknown fill material.  A large area of concrete spoils uncovered during construction resulted in regrading of one field.

Curtis Park is a particularly good example of thorough and high quality irrigation design working with Carl Kominsky, irrigation sub-consultant.  After construction was completed, fluctuations in pressure at the point of connection to an existing reclaimed water mainline, caused underperformance of ball field spray heads.  Through some careful detective work, it was determined that the problem lay several thousand feet away.  The mainline was incorrectly routed through a series of master valves and flow sensors not calibrated to allow for the additional flows to the new park.  The WSA team brought the problem to the attention of County NRPR staff.

WSA scope and role.  WSA adjusted an existing Master Plan based on program revisions and Pima County Floodplain concerns about ground water contamination.  Concept diagrams were prepared, reviewed and accepted at a public open house.  Design documents included use of recently released Pima County NRPR standard details.  WSA collaborated particularly closely with civil engineering and environmental subconsultants to site ballfields, parking (large facilities) to ensure sufficient area for riparian restoration.
