5th St./2nd Ave. Park
5th and 2nd Avenues Neighborhood Parks. Construction complete 2007.
Client Program / Project Description. A joint effort of the City of South Tucson and Pima County Natural Resources Parks and Recreation, the program for these half-a-residential-lot scale parks included half-court basketball, play equipment for two age groups, picnic ramada with BBQ facilities and planting and irrigation for each site. Design and construction funding was provided by multiple sources.
WSA Scope and Role. Beginning with concept sketch plans initiated by the City County and land surveys, WSA tested alternative arrangements (orientation, adjacencies of elements, grading and drainage) for each site. The small size of the sites and extent of program restricted selection and arrangement of play equipment to accommodate fall-zones. Cast-in-place and wood fiber resilient surfaces were used to add color and contain costs.
In addition, WSA proposed incorporation of recessed panels in perimeter site walls for future tile art by the County-sponsored Las Artes group to “personalize” the Parks and foster neighborhood acceptance.
Given the restrictions of some funding sources, WSA prepared construction documents in appropriate phases, and provided detailed construction administration services, accordingly.
